Asheville City Directories show Johnnie Cannon working as an elevator operator or as a bellman in different hotels, as a Pullman porter, and as caddy master at Asheville Country Club. Ruth taught for many years at Livingston Street School in Asheville. During the early 1900s, Ruths father Benjamin J. Jackson operated a produce stand in the City Market located in the Municipal Building. The whole family helped in the business, but after graduation from high school, each of Jacksons ten children was encouraged to go to college. Most of the Jackson children became teachers after graduation. Ruth, the youngest, attended Shaw University in Raleigh.
