As described in the 1915 Asheville City Directory, Circle Terrace Sanatorium “is believed to be the only institution in the world for the exclusive treatment and care of tuberculosis for Colored People.” The sanitorium went out of business around 1917. In November of 1917 Catholic Hill School for black students burned, killing seven students. For several years the old sanitorium building was used for classrooms while a new school was being constructed. Stephens-Lee, the new school located just above the site of the old Catholic Hill School, opened in the spring of 1923.
