Market Street Branch of Asheville Libraries, circa 1945

A separate Asheville library branch for African Americans opened in 1927 on Market St. South. Located in the Young Men’s Institute (YMI) building at the corner of Market and Eagle Streets, it was called Market Street Branch of City Libraries. The branch closed in 1966, after the library system desegregated in 1962. Irene O. Hendrick (Mrs. Robert M. Hendrick) served as head librarian for the entire forty years that the library was in operation.
