Marguerite Kimberly Carter

Born in 1903, Marguerite Carter had vivid memories of picnicking at Riverside Park and of the Flood of 1916. After teaching elementary school for several years, she went to Columbia University to study physical education. She taught physical education to girls at David Millard and Hall Fletcher and for many years at St. Genevieve’s of the Pines. She was active in the Carolina Mountain Club, established in Asheville, North Carolina 1923, the second oldest Hiking and Trail Maintenance Club in Western NC. In this photo are hikers Marguerite Carter, unidentified, Margery Craze, Piercy Carter, Pauline Junke, Elizabeth Parker, and Herb Carpenter. Into her 90’s Marguerite Carter kept in shape with weekly 6-mile hikes in the mountains. At 93, she taught an aerobics class.
