Gail Godwin

Author Gail Godwin was raised in Asheville, where her mother, Kathleen Cole, was a teacher. Godwin’s body of work has earned many honors, including three National Book Award nominations, a Guggenheim Fellowship, National Endowment for the Arts grants for both fiction and libretto writing, and the Award in Literature from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. Five of her novels have been on the New York Times best seller list. In this 1987 photo by Dan Millspaugh, she is shown at a book signing for her novel A Southern Family.
