The second location (1883-1886) of the Asheville Public Library was on the second floor of a mercantile building on the east side of South Main Street (now Biltmore Avenue). The sign above C.W. DeVault’s Drugstore says “Reading Room and Public Library.” The Asheville City Directory of 1883 describes an “elegant library’ with more than 1,000 volumes.
