Is it true that the faculty members of Stephens-Lee High School were very highly educated? how educated were they?
How did they afford obtaining Master Degrees, as well as additional graduate level courses?
What colleges and universities did they attend, when prior to integration, Southern colleges and Universities were not open to blacks?
What was the social and cultural environment like for the students of Stephens-Lee? What part did the faculty, principals, parents, community and churches play in their education?
What happened to these highly qualified teachers after integration?
Stephens-Lee faculty checking records.
The North Carolina Room staff at Pack Memorial Library, asked the questions and have done the research to answer these questions and others, as best they can.
Please join us and a panel of Stephens-Lee graduates and be a part of the conversation.
Zoe Rhine, North Carolina Room Librarian with over 26 years experience, will talk about what brought her to this research.
Joe Newman, board member of the Friends of the North Carolina Room, and retired professor of education from the University of South Alabama, will put the research in context and show just how “truly exceptional” Stephens-Lee was.
They will be joined in a conversation moderated by Roy Harris with Stephens-Lee alumni: Richard Bowman, Sarah Hart, Rev. L. C. Ray and Oralene Simmons.

The history of Stephens-Lee High School should never be forgotten . In the 1950’s , the faculty gave us the opportunity to learn , share , respect andhave a positive attitude .
My journey started at the school in 1951 . Attended JCSU for undergrad studies , NYU for Graduate studies .
A wonderful journey from Congress Street to Wall Street .
Many thanks to the faculty of SLHS .
