In 1879 Anna C Aston, Fannie Patton, and Annie Chunn of the Asheville Readiers Club formed the Asheville Library Association. Donations of money, books and periodicals were solicited. The first location of Asheville’s library was a room in the law office of Mr. Walter S Cushman, on the third floor of the Courthouse. The library of around 100 books was open daily except Sunday, and the annual membership fee was $1.50.
